Near Miss

Driving down the open highway.

Alone! Free! Young!

High speed.

The sun, it rises.

Shadows long, fog hugging the horizon.

Bare paddocks to the left, the right.

A wallaby       APPEARS.

Jumping. jump, jump.

Stops. Middle of the road, directly before me.

Stands upright. Alert.

Ears. pricked. up.

Snap out of the enchanted dawn. Snap on the brakes.

FOOT DOWNNNNNNNNNNN! HARD!

Do not swerve.

Head whips, whips forward.

Stop, stop, STOP!

Stopped, merely metres from the wallaby.

It stares down the headlights.

I stare back.

It stares.

I stare.

Wallaby turns head sharply. Contemplates bare paddock.

Jump, jump, jump, bounce, bounce, hop, hop……………

I sit. In the middle of the fog and flat highway and sunrise.

White knuckles on steering wheel.

Heart beating.

Thumping.

Wallaby dissolves into fog. Out of sight.

Drive on.

Drive on.

Driving down the open highway.
